THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY

THE GLORY

Tottenham were the first English club of the century to win the Double: 31 wins, 115 goals, champions by eight points. Two years later they beat Atlético Madrid 5-1 in Rotterdam, the first British club to win a UEFA competition. Sixty years before that, they won the FA Cup as a non-League club. The 1961 title was their last.

THE HINGE

Harry Kane scored 280 goals in 435 games for Spurs and won nothing there. Ten days after Kane's first trophy, in Germany, Tottenham beat Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao with a Brennan Johnson goal: their first trophy in 17 years and first in Europe in 41.

SEVENTEENTH

They finished 17th that season, the lowest finish ever for a European trophy winner, then 17th again: three managers, six straight defeats and three home wins, staying up by two points on the final day.

THE DARE

This summer they paid £100m for Sandro Tonali and £85m for Mateus Fernandes, a club record, with no European football. The badge reads Audere est Facere: to dare is to do. Number 17 in THE COUNTDOWN.
