THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY

THE RECORD

In 1962 Ipswich Town won the First Division in their first ever season as a top-flight club, promoted the summer before by a single point. Liverpool (1906), Everton (1932), Tottenham (1951) and Nottingham Forest (1978) also won the title the season after promotion, but all had played top-flight football before. Ipswich never had.

THE LAST DAY

Ipswich beat Aston Villa 2-0 with two Ray Crawford goals, then walked off not knowing if they were champions because Burnley were still playing. Burnley drew, and 28,932 people at Portman Road found out together.

THE MANAGERS

Alf Ramsey agreed to manage England six months later and said they would win the World Cup; in 1966 they did. Bobby Robson then spent 13 years at Ipswich, winning the FA Cup in 1978 and the UEFA Cup in 1981, before England came for him too.

NOW

After a fall to the third tier, Kieran McKenna took Ipswich up, then back up again after finishing 19th, beating QPR 3-0 on the final day to go up second by one point. Five weeks later, he left.
