THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY
THE ODDITY
Nottingham Forest are the only club in Europe to have won the European Cup more times than their own league: one English title and two European Cups, back to back.
CLOUGH'S FOUR SEASONS
Forest were promoted in 1977, champions of England in 1978 and of Europe in 1979 and 1980. In February 1979 Trevor Francis became Britain's first £1m player, and three months later he headed the winner against Malmö in Munich. Brian Clough, sacked by Leeds after 44 days, stayed 18 years.
THE FALL
Forest went down in Clough's last season and from 1999 spent 23 years outside the top flight, three of them in the third tier. They came back in 2022 and finished seventh in 2025.
THE CHAOS
In 2025-26 Forest became the first Premier League club to use four permanent managers in a season; Ange Postecoglou lasted 39 days and eight games without a win. They finished 16th but reached a Europa League semi-final. Elliot Anderson then went to Manchester City for a reported £116m, and Oliver Glasner arrived. Number 16 in THE COUNTDOWN.
