The World Cup a Dictator Refused to Lose

THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY

THE HOST

1934, the second World Cup ever played, and the first one a host nation set out to win at any cost. Benito Mussolini's Italy hosted it and funded it, and a World Cup won at home became propaganda no speech could buy.

THE FORMAT

Sixteen teams, straight knockout, no groups. The final in Rome was settled in extra time.

THE SHADOW

Italy's players were real champions and won again in 1938. But 1934 proved a World Cup could be staged, funded and won by a regime that needed the win, and the tournament has carried the shadow of the man in the stand ever since.
