THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY
THE MACHINE
Name a Swiss superstar. There isn't one: no Ballon d'Or winner, no galáctico, just a system. Switzerland topped their 2026 World Cup group unbeaten and reached a quarter-final for the first time since 1954, a wait of 72 years.
THE GHOST OF 1954
As hosts that year, Switzerland led 3-0 in the Heat Battle of Lausanne and lost 7-5, the highest-scoring match in World Cup history.
THE ROAD
Captain Granit Xhaka at his fourth World Cup, Breel Embolo the squad's top scorer. Against Colombia it finished 0-0 after 120 minutes; Gregor Kobel saved from Cucho Hernández, Davinson Sánchez hit the bar, and Rubén Vargas, not fit enough to start, scored the last kick.
THE PRECEDENT
At Euro 2021 Switzerland drew 3-3 with world champions France and won on penalties when Yann Sommer saved from Mbappé, their first knockout win in 83 years.
NEXT
