THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY

THE BOY

Newcastle released Dan Burn, from Blyth, at 11. He pushed trolleys at Asda, played non-league football and fought his way back to his home club.

WEMBLEY

On 16 March 2025, days after his first England call-up, Burn headed Newcastle in front against Liverpool. Isak added a second in a 2-1 win: the club's first domestic trophy since 1955. 150,000 fans filled the Town Moor to welcome it home.

THE BILL

Newcastle have a history of selling their stars: Waddle, Beardsley, Gascoigne. Six months after Wembley, Isak joined Liverpool for a British-record £125m. Without European football, Gordon, Tonali and captain Bruno Guimarães followed, and Eddie Howe left, calling the job the privilege of his lifetime.

WHAT'S LEFT

Matthias Jaissle, 38, arrived with a stripped squad and balanced books, but St James' Park stayed full. As Sir Bobby Robson wrote, a club is the small boy on the stadium steps. Number 12 in THE COUNTDOWN.
