THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY

THE HOST

In May 1960 the largest earthquake ever recorded struck southern Chile. Federation president Carlos Dittborn said: "Because we have nothing, we will do everything." He died six weeks before the 1962 tournament.

THE GROUPS

Colombia's Marcos Coll scored an Olympic goal past Lev Yashin in a 4–4 draw. Chile beat Italy 2–0 in the Battle of Santiago. Pelé was injured in Brazil's second match and did not play again; Amarildo came in.

GARRINCHA

He scored twice in the 3–1 quarter-final win over England and twice in the 4–2 semi-final win over Chile, where he was sent off. Brazil beat Josef Masopust's Czechoslovakia 3–1 in the final on 17 June 1962. Chile took bronze.

THE LEGACY

Garrincha won the Golden Ball and a share of the Golden Boot with four goals. Twenty-three days after the final, Telstar 1 was launched; football would soon be watched live across oceans.
