THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY

THE INJURY

At the 1962 World Cup in Chile, Pelé tore his groin in Brazil's second match. He was finished for the tournament.

THE MAN

Garrincha's left leg was six centimetres shorter than his right, and both knees twisted inward from childhood polio. Doctors said he should not play football at all.

THE TOURNAMENT

In 1962 Garrincha ran the World Cup: four goals, three assists, the Golden Ball and a share of the Golden Boot. Brazil were world champions, and he became the first man to win all three in a single tournament. The full story is EP08 of The World Cup Universe, Garrincha Carries the Crown.
