THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY

THE BUILD-UP

Before Chile v Italy at the 1962 World Cup, Italian journalists wrote that Santiago was a city of mud and misery. Chile heard every word.

THE MATCH

Eight minutes in, Ferrini was sent off. Two players were dismissed in total, police came onto the pitch, and a nose was broken. The referee missed much of it.

THE VERDICT

On the BBC, David Coleman called it 'the most stupid, appalling, disgusting, disgraceful exhibition of football'. Chile won 2-0, but nobody remembers the score.
