THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY

THE CLASH

At the 1958 World Cup, Brazil and hosts Sweden both played in yellow, so Brazil, as visitors, had to change.

THE SHIRTS

With no spare kit, captain Bellini went into the shops of Stockholm on the morning of the final and bought plain blue shirts. The crest was sewn on by hand hours before kick-off. Brazil won 5-2 for their first World Cup.

THE ANSWER

The film did not explain why blue. Viewers did, in the comments: it is the blue of Our Lady of Aparecida, Brazil's patron saint, and her mantle.

THE RETURN

The film was released on a night Brazil wore blue again.
