THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY

THE WHITE SHIRT

Brazil wore white in 1950. They were the most feared attack in the tournament, beating Sweden 7–1 and Spain 6–1, and needed only a draw against Uruguay to be crowned.

THE GOAL

In the 79th minute Alcides Ghiggia scored. Uruguay won 2–1: the Maracanazo.

THE NEW KIT

The white shirt was blamed for the defeat. A newspaper held a contest to design a new one, and the yellow canarinho jersey was born. Brazil never wore white again.
