Italy lifted the World Cup in 1938. Then the world stopped.
THE SILENCE
1942: cancelled, the world at war. 1946: cancelled, the world in ruins. Twelve years passed with no tournament. The Jules Rimet trophy spent the war hidden in a shoebox under a bed in Rome, to keep it out of Nazi hands.
THE RETURN
When football came back in 1950, it came back to the Maracanã in Brazil. The first World Cup after the war is told in full in EP05 of The World Cup Universe.
