THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY

THE SIZE

Uruguay, a country smaller than the city of Rio de Janeiro, has won the World Cup twice.

1930

Uruguay hosted and won the first World Cup with a population under two million. Héctor Castro, who had one arm and was known as El Divino Manco, scored in the final.

1950

In the Maracanazo, Brazil needed only a draw in front of 200,000 at the Maracanã. With 11 minutes left Alcides Ghiggia scored. As Ghiggia put it: 'Only three people have silenced the Maracanã: the Pope, Frank Sinatra, and me.'

THE RECORD

Two stars and five semi-finals. The film was released on the day Uruguay faced Spain in 2026 needing a result to survive.
