THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY
THE CALL
Mexico had never won a World Cup opener. Before kickoff of the 2026 opener at the Azteca, our engine simulated Mexico v South Africa and called it Mexico 2–1, with Jiménez scoring twice and a late red card for South Africa's Mbatha.
THE SIMULATION
This is a simulation, declared before the real whistle, and graded in public afterwards. It is part of the 18-match opening-week film.
THE GRADE
Reality: Mexico 2–0. Right winner, wrong score. The engine did call a red card at 85'; the real one came at 84'. What it never saw: three red cards, Quiñones scoring inside nine minutes, and 17-year-old Gilberto Mora making his World Cup debut.
