THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY
UNITED
Danny Welbeck, born in Manchester in 1990, joined United's academy at ten. His first Premier League goal was a 30-yard curler in a 5-0 win over Stoke in 2008. He made 142 appearances for United and won the 2012-13 Premier League, with loan spells at Preston and Sunderland.
ARSENAL
On deadline day in 2014 he joined Arsenal for £16m, the only disclosed fee of his career, and in 2015 scored the FA Cup quarter-final winner at Old Trafford. In 2017 he beat Chelsea twice at Wembley: in the FA Cup final and in the Community Shield. A broken ankle in November 2018 ended his time there.
THE COMEBACK
After relegation with Watford he spent 12 days without a club, then joined Brighton free on a one-year deal. Six seasons later he left as Brighton's all-time top Premier League scorer, with 13 league goals in 2025-26, the best league season of his career, at 35.
THE LOOP
Nine years after those Wembley wins, Chelsea signed him. Career total: seven shirts, 521 appearances, 123 goals and 42 England caps.
