THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY
THE BOY
James Milner made his debut for Leeds in November 2002, aged 16. Six weeks later he became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history, breaking Wayne Rooney's record by four days.
THE SPAN
He then played for Leeds, Newcastle, Villa, City, Liverpool and Brighton across 24 seasons and a record 658 Premier League games. Of the roughly 5,000 players to appear in the league, 49% played with or against him. He had 21 managers, from Bobby Robson (born 1933) to Fabian Hurzeler (born 1993).
THE ODD ONES
He is the only player to score past goalkeepers born in the 1960s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s, and in the 55 Premier League games in which he scored, he never lost.
THE HANDOVER
Milner retired on 1 June 2026, aged 40, as the most-played footballer in the competition's history. The youngest-scorer record now belongs to Max Dowman, 16, who won the league. Two men from his era carry on: Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck, both signed by Chelsea this summer at 36 and 35.
