Original draft had Chelsea down as the first-ever club elected to the League without playing a match — that's wrong, Bradford City did it first in 1903, two years ahead of Chelsea, so the line got fixed to "only Bradford City had done it before." Also caught: the script said the club was "four months old" at its first match, but 10 March to 2 September is basically six months, so that got corrected. And we dropped the "empty stadium" hook entirely — Stamford Bridge was a working athletics ground when Chelsea showed up, still hosting the London Athletic Club, so it became "no football team," not "empty," which is the more honest and honestly better line anyway.
THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY
THE GROUND
Stamford Bridge wasn't built for Chelsea. It opened in 1877 as an athletics ground for the London Athletic Club, and it was still an active venue, not some abandoned lot, when brothers Gus and Joseph Mears finally locked down the freehold in 1904 after chasing the site since 1896. Gus's plan was to turn it into one of the finest football grounds in the country. Only problem: he had a ground and no football club to put in it.
THE FULHAM REFUSAL
The obvious tenant was the club next door, Fulham, playing out of Craven Cottage. Mears offered them the ground at a proposed rent of £1,500 a year, well above what Fulham was willing to pay, and the tenancy deal collapsed. With no football tenant lined up, Mears came close to selling the site outright to the Great Western Railway, who wanted it for a coal yard. Chelsea Football Club, in other words, nearly never existed — Fulham's no is the reason it had to.
THE DOG BITE
What survives from here is the story Chelsea's own official history still tells, credited to a later recollection by Fred Parker, the man pushing hardest to back the football plan. Mears and Parker were talking it over when Mears's terrier bit Parker hard enough to draw blood. Parker laughed it off and kept talking football. Mears, apparently convinced by how calmly Parker took the bite, decided on the spot to back him. It's a story preserved in club folklore, not an independently verified event — but it's the version Chelsea tells about its own founding.
THE FOUNDING
On 10 March 1905, in an upstairs room of the Rising Sun pub across the road from the ground (the building still stands today as the Butcher's Hook), they formed a club for the stadium. Names discussed and dropped included Stamford Bridge FC, Kensington FC and London United. They landed on Chelsea — the borough next door — because the ground itself actually sits in the borough of Fulham. The club is named after a district it has never called home.
THE BACKWARDS ORDER
On 29 May 1905, Fred Parker helped talk the Football League into electing Chelsea to the Second Division before the club had played a single competitive match. Only Bradford City, in 1903, had ever pulled that off before them. Chelsea signed a manager and players before that vote — including marquee goalkeeper William "Fatty" Foulke, a 22-stone, England-capped keeper — and didn't play its first game until 2 September 1905, a 1-0 defeat away at Stockport County, with the club not yet six months old. Ground first, club second, league place before a ball was kicked.
THE PAYOFF
The club built backwards eventually won everything the right way round: champions of England, champions of Europe, and, as of 2025, champions of the world after beating PSG 3-0 in the Club World Cup final.
