THE DESK — NOTES & REMARKS
This one went through two rounds of fact-checking and needed real fixes, not just polish. V1 had Milan "conquering the continent" in 1970 — wrong, they won the European Cup in 1969, Feyenoord won it in 1970. The line claiming 22 October is Bournemouth's "first European night" was wrong too — that's actually 15 October v Sturm Graz, so the Milan game got reframed as the marquee/giant night rather than the first one. The 1972 badge line was softened from "the badge still carries Milan inside it" to language making clear the badge carries the Milan-inspired stripe design, not Milan's actual crest. And the Great Escape copy got dialed back to what's actually documented: supporters helped keep the club going, and the club was on the brink of liquidation/losing League status, not a literal minute-by-minute claim.
THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY
THE ORIGIN
AC Milan was founded on 16 December 1899 by Herbert Kilpin, an Englishman working in Nottingham before he settled in Italy. Kilpin's club wore red and black from the start and called itself a "team of devils." That badge, and those colours, are club-canonical history for Milan.
THE BORROW
Bournemouth spent much of the 1960s in plain red. In 1970–71, manager John Bond changed the club's shirts to red-and-black stripes inspired by AC Milan, and Bournemouth were promoted that same season. The club took the name AFC Bournemouth in 1971, and in 1972 adopted the Dowsett-designed crest — a badge that carries that Milan-inspired stripe design, though not Milan's own crest.
THE FALL
In 2008 Bournemouth went into administration carrying roughly £4m in debt. A ten-point deduction in League One helped send them down, and a separate 17-point deduction followed when League Two began that season, leaving the club on the brink of liquidation and of losing its Football League status. Supporters helped keep the club going through the crisis, and under a young Eddie Howe, Bournemouth beat Grimsby 2–1 in the match remembered as the Great Escape.
THE RISE
Bournemouth were promoted to the Premier League in 2015 under Howe. In 2025–26 they finished sixth in the Premier League, securing the club's first-ever European qualification. Marco Rose has since taken over as manager for 2026–27, replacing Iraola.
THE NIGHT
Milan won the European Cup in 1969 and count seven European Cups and nineteen league titles among their history. They finished fifth in Serie A in 2025–26 on 70 points, entering this season's Europa League. Bournemouth's actual first European night at Vitality Stadium is 15 October 2026, against Sturm Graz — Milan follow a week later, on 22 October 2026, kicking off at 20:00, as the league-phase visit from the European giant whose colours Bournemouth still wear.
THE NUMBERS
San Siro holds around 75,800; Vitality Stadium holds about 11,300. Fifty-six years after Bond borrowed Milan's stripes, the badge Bournemouth wear into that game still carries the design he copied.
