THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY
THE MOMENT
Montevideo, 1930, the 89th minute of the first World Cup final. Uruguay led Argentina 3–2 when a cross came in from the right.
THE MAN
Héctor Castro lost his right hand in an accident at the age of 13 and was known across South America as "El Manco", the one-handed. His header made it 4–2, and Uruguay became the first world champions.
AFTERWARDS
Castro went on to coach the nation he had made champions. The full story of 1930 is told in EP02 of The World Cup Universe.
