The Premier League Ate Itself: £1.5BN of Deals Between Rivals | THE FILES 003

£1.5bn of transfers between direct rivals in one window — the internal market, mapped.

THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY

THE MARKET

In the 2026 summer window Premier League clubs did their biggest business with each other: 27 major club-to-club deals worth about £1.47bn that never left the league.

CHELSEA AND VILLA

Four deals: Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for £117m, the most expensive British footballer ever; Jackson back the other way; Garnacho on loan with an obligation; and Emi Martínez for £7.5m three days before the deadline.

OLD WALLS DOWN

Chelsea and Spurs did two deals in a day (Mudryk and Tosin), their first moves since Cudicini in 2009 and first fee since Poyet in 2001. United paid Chelsea £50m for Santos and rang City on deadline night about Ait-Nouri, the first Manchester fee talk in 30 years.

ARMING RIVALS

Newcastle sold Tonali to Spurs (£100m) and Guimarães to Arsenal. Liverpool priced Gakpo at £85m for City (talks only), Everton and Palace swapped McNeil and Johnson, and Robertson left Liverpool for Tottenham on a free.
