THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY
THE FINAL
19 June 1938, Stade Olympique de Colombes, Paris. Holders Italy against Hungary.
THE GOALS
Italy scored and Hungary answered almost at once. Then Gino Colaussi struck twice and Silvio Piola struck twice. It was 3–1 at half-time and finished 4–2. President Lebrun handed the trophy to Giuseppe Meazza.
BACK TO BACK
Italy were the first team to win the World Cup twice, and the first to win it back to back. Vittorio Pozzo remains the only manager to win two World Cups. Then the war came, and the trophy spent it hidden in a shoebox under a bed.
