THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY

THE LAST ONE

1938, France. The third World Cup, and the last one the world would play for twelve years.

THE EMPTY CHAIRS

Austria had been annexed by Nazi Germany that March, and its great Wunderteam simply ceased to exist. Its players were handed German shirts; its greatest, Matthias Sindelar, refused to wear one. Austria's place in the draw was left blank. Spain was absent, torn apart by civil war.

THE SILENCE

France hosted as Europe slid toward the dark. Fourteen months after the final, the world was at war, and twelve years of silence followed. The full story is told in EP04 of The World Cup Universe.
