THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY
THE EMPIRE
Manchester United have 20 league titles and three European Cups. Sir Matt Busby built champions from kids; the Munich air crash of February 1958 killed 23 people, eight of them his players. Ten years later Bobby Charlton, a survivor, scored twice as United became England's first European champions. Sir Alex Ferguson then added 13 titles in 26 years and the 1999 Treble.
THE WANDERING
After 2013, seven managers came and went. Cups came, the title did not. In 2025-26 United went out of the cup to fourth-tier Grimsby, and Amorim was sacked in January with the club sixth.
THE QUIET MAN
Michael Carrick, a midfielder in Ferguson's last title team, took over with United seventh. They beat City, Arsenal, Tottenham and Villa, sealed the Champions League with a 3-2 win over Liverpool, and lost only twice in 17 games to finish third.
THE REBUILD
Carrick was made permanent. Santos arrived from Chelsea, Tielemans' clause was triggered, and Marcus Rashford returned from Barcelona. Number 3 in THE COUNTDOWN.
