THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY
WHO FELL
Liverpool have six European Cups, more than any English club, and 20 league titles. Shankly built them out of the Second Division, and Klopp ended a 30-year title wait. One year before this season, they were champions of England.
THE SLIDE
In 2025-26 they lost 12 games and finished on 60 points, their lowest in a decade and 25 behind the champions. A British-record £125m signing, Isak from Newcastle, could not stop it.
THE FRACTURE
In December, Mo Salah suggested openly that he was being made a scapegoat. By March his exit was confirmed, and Andy Robertson announced his too. On the final day a 1-1 draw with Brentford scraped Champions League football, and Anfield gave both men a guard of honour.
THE REBIRTH
Liverpool finished fifth. Andoni Iraola, architect of Bournemouth's best season, became manager; Araújo arrived from Barcelona, with reports of a Barcola move to follow. Number 5 in THE COUNTDOWN.
