THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY
THE ORIGIN
The League Cup was born in 1960, and its first final wasn't even at Wembley: Aston Villa overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit to win it over two legs. Since then it's carried eight different sponsored names — the Milk Cup, Littlewoods, Rumbelows, Coca-Cola, Worthington, Carling, Capital One, and now Carabao. Same competition, same chaos.
THE DYNASTIES
Liverpool lead the all-time list with ten wins. Manchester City sit one behind on nine — and both clubs own a four-peat, forty years apart: 1981-84 and 2018-21.
THE GIANT-KILLINGS
In 1967, Third Division QPR came from 2-0 down to win the first Wembley final 3-2. Two years later, Third Division Swindon beat Arsenal. In 2013, fourth-tier Bradford City reached the final itself.
THE 2025 FINAL
Newcastle beat Liverpool in the final and ended a seventy-year wait for a domestic trophy. Grown men wept at Wembley.
THE RECORDS
Ian Rush is still the competition's record scorer with 49 goals. Sergio Agüero and Fernandinho were the first players to win it six times.
