THE AFTERTHOUGHT
For most of its history Canada was a hockey country and a football team nobody feared. At its first World Cup, in 1986, it lost all three games without scoring. Then came 36 years without a return.
THE GENERATION
It was led by Alphonso Davies, born in a refugee camp in Ghana. In qualifying, Canada finished top of its region, above the United States and Mexico.
2022
Davies missed a penalty against Belgium. Days later, after 68 seconds, he headed in Canada's first-ever World Cup goal. Canada still went out early.
THE RISE
Jesse Marsch took Canada to a Copa América semi-final. In 2026 Canada co-hosts the World Cup and reached the knockout rounds on home soil.
