THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY
THE FINAL
Råsunda Stadium, 29 June 1958. Brazil, in plain blue shirts bought in a Stockholm shop that morning, against hosts Sweden.
THE GOALS
Nils Liedholm put Sweden ahead after four minutes. Garrincha then set up two goals for Vavá. In the 55th minute Pelé chested the ball down, flicked it over Bengt Gustavsson and volleyed it in; the Swedish crowd applauded him. Zagallo made it 4–1, Agne Simonsson pulled one back, and Pelé headed the fifth in the 90th minute.
THE BOY
Brazil 5–2 Sweden: their first World Cup. The 17-year-old Pelé, man of the match, cried in the centre circle and was lifted onto his teammates' shoulders.
