THE WORKERS' CLUB
In 1878, railway workers who built carriages for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway started a football team. They called it Newton Heath. Green and gold shirts, a workers' club, nothing special — for twenty-four years.
THE COLLAPSE
By January 1902 it was dead. Debts had hit £2,670, a sum the modern club — which today carries over £749 million of debt and survives just fine — wouldn't notice. Back then, a creditor demanding £242, 17 shillings and 10 pence was enough to finish them. Bankrupt. Bailiffs in.
THE DOG
This is the story United themselves still tell. February 1901, a fundraising bazaar at St James's Hall. Four days in, the captain's St Bernard — Major — escapes with a collection tin still hanging from his collar. He wanders Manchester and ends up at the home of brewery millionaire John Henry Davies, whose eleven-year-old daughter Elsie falls in love with him. Captain Harry Stafford comes to collect his dog. Davies offers to buy him. Stafford refuses — but when the club goes under a year later, he knows exactly whose door to knock on. His price: save my football club.
THE RESCUE
Four businessmen, £500 each. The debts were wiped. On 26 April 1902 the club needed a new name — Manchester Central was rejected, sounded like a railway station; Manchester Celtic was rejected too. Then: Manchester United. With the new name came the new shirt. That's the moment the red arrived.
THE PAYOFF
Six years later, they were champions of England. Twenty league titles now — level with Liverpool, never claimed ahead. George Best, Bobby Charlton, Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo — all of it in red that exists because of one escaped dog. And Major himself was never simply given away: Davies traded him, and Elsie got the dog for her twelfth birthday. The biggest club in England was, in a very real sense, bought for a dog.
