THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY
WHAT THEY WERE
Coventry City spent 34 consecutive seasons in England's top flight, from 1967 to 2001, and won the FA Cup in 1987, beating Tottenham 3-2 at Wembley.
THE COLLAPSE
After relegation and administration over £1.3m in unpaid rent, Coventry started 2013-14 on minus ten points and were sent 34 miles away to play home games at Northampton. Fans boycotted under the slogan "Not One Penny More" while packing out away games. In March 2014 only 1,697 watched a home game against Stevenage.
HOMELESS AGAIN
They returned to their stadium in 2014, were exiled again in 2019 to Birmingham's St Andrew's, and won the League One title while homeless.
UP — In the 2024 FA Cup semi-final they came back from 3-0 down against Manchester United to 3-3, had a 121st-minute winner ruled out by VAR and lost on penalties. In April 2026 Frank Lampard took them up as Championship champions. Twenty-five years after they were last in the top flight, they open the 2026-27 Premier League season at the Emirates, with 60,000 expected.
