THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY
1982
Algeria had beaten West Germany, but in the final group game West Germany and Austria knew a 1-0 German win would put both through. After an early goal they stopped attacking, and Algeria went home. It became known as the Disgrace of Gijón, and FIFA changed the rules so that final group games kick off at the same time.
2026
Algeria and Austria were drawn together again. In Kansas City, goals from Arnautović, Belghali, Sabitzer and Mahrez made it 2-2, a result that sent both through, and the passing started again. Mahrez broke the pact in the 93rd minute to make it 3-2.
THE LAST KICK
Substitute Saša Kalajdžić, who has torn his ACL three times, headed in a 3-3 equaliser. Both teams went through and Iran went out.
NOTE
The 2026 match is a dramatised World Cup Universe scenario built on real photos. The 1982 Gijón stills are archival.
