THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY
THE FINAL
Part II of The Throne previews the 2026 World Cup final: Spain against Argentina, two nations that had never met in a World Cup final in 96 years.
THE CHAMPIONS
Argentina, the holders, were dragged to the edge throughout the tournament and never broke. They beat England 2-1 in the semi-final. Three stars, Maradona's hand, and Messi's last dance.
THE MACHINE
Spain reached the final having conceded one goal in seven games, with Lamine Yamal leading the next generation.
THE INHERITANCE
One photograph links the two sides: a young Messi holding baby Lamine Yamal for a charity shoot. If Argentina won, they would be the first back-to-back champions since 1938. If Spain won, the boy Messi once held would be crowned.
THE GENERALS
Lionel Scaloni, one win from standing beside Pozzo, against De la Fuente, the teacher nobody watched. In goal, the Dibu show against Unai Simón: fire in one goal, ice in the other.
