Desk note, 5 Sept: this was the hardest data pull we've done — no outlet had published a positional split of the summer window, so we classified all 78 deals of £15m and over ourselves from the Opta/Squawka fee set. Ambiguous roles were excluded from midfield rather than counted toward the headline: Rogers sits in the AM column, and the 35% would be over 40% if you count him. When our number disagrees with a bigger outlet's, it's usually because they counted gross volume and we counted classified deals.
Remark on the counterargument: we aired the £85m man's 5-in-72 deliberately. The market being right and the market being mad are both live possibilities, and the film only works if we hold both.
