THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY
THE CURSE
Since 1986 Mexico have reached the last sixteen at seven straight World Cups and gone out every time: forty years without a knockout win.
THE AZTECA
Built on volcanic rock and opened in 1966, El Coloso de Santa Úrsula held more than 107,000. Pelé was crowned there in 1970 and Maradona scored the Hand of God and the Goal of the Century there in 1986. It is the only ground where both lifted the World Cup, and the only stadium to host two World Cup finals.
THIS TEAM
In 2026 Mexico won all three group games without conceding, a first in their history.
THE NIGHT
The film was released before Mexico's Round of 16 tie with Ecuador at the Azteca, asking whether the hosts could finally break the wall.
