THE ULTIMATUM

At his unveiling as Germany head coach on 24 July 2026, Jürgen Klopp opened with a warning, not a mission statement: cross the line with his family, and he walks. It set the tone for everything that followed — a manager who knows exactly what he's inheriting and isn't pretending otherwise.

THE FALL

Germany had never lost a World Cup penalty shootout: four for four since 1982 (France, Mexico, England, Argentina in 2006), one miss in eighteen kicks. On 29 June 2026 in Foxborough, Paraguay beat them 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw — Havertz, Woltemade and Tah all missed, keeper Orlando Gill saved twice. It was Manuel Neuer's last game for Germany (124 caps, aged 40) and Antonio Rüdiger's too (86 caps). Since lifting the trophy in 2014, Germany have played exactly one World Cup knockout match in twelve years — and lost it, after group-stage exits in 2018 (their first since 1938, the biggest FIFA-rankings fall ever recorded, 1st to 15th) and 2022, then a last-32 exit in 2026. The ranking tells the same story: number one in July 2014, twelfth in July 2026 — their lowest in eighteen years.

THE JOB

Thirteen men have held the Bundestrainer job in a hundred years. From 1936 to 1998, just five coaches did the job — Herberger, Schön, Derwall, Beckenbauer, Vogts — and every one of them won a major trophy. The last five years alone produced three managers: Hansi Flick, the only Germany coach ever sacked (10 September 2023, a day after a 4-1 loss to Japan); Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned four days after the Paraguay defeat; and now Klopp, signed to a four-year deal through the 2030 World Cup after a DFB delegation flew to New York to meet him — at the World Cup broadcast studio where he'd been watching the collapse as a pundit.

THE PLAN

Klopp says he's watched 57 players already. His stated principles: counter-pressing as "a key element," a back four because "the national teams that won the World Cup played with four defenders," and wingers used as playmakers. Then the part no incoming national coach has really done before — a training-ground tour of the Bundesliga, six days and five clubs (28 August–2 September): Bayern (twenty minutes pitchside with Vincent Kompany), Augsburg, Stuttgart (seven players inspected in one session, per Bild), Mainz (a closed session at the club where he spent eighteen years), and Frankfurt, where he sat down with Younes Ebnoutalib — the striker Morocco left out of its World Cup squad — to make the case for Germany. His pitch to every club coach along the way: "a collaboration that I would have wished for when I was still a club coach."

THE RESISTANCE AND THE CLOCK

Not everyone welcomed the tour. Uli Hoeneß called the arrival of Klopp's entourage a "friendly takeover" of the DFB. Thomas Müller said football "won't be reinvented." Klopp's response: people judge things before anything's actually been done. Behind him: Peter Krawietz and Pep Lijnders on staff, Sven Bender, and Rudi Völler staying on through Euro 2028 — the same man who helped rebuild this federation after the last real collapse, Euro 2000. Kimmich keeps the captain's armband; the goalkeeper spot among Baumann, Nübel, Urbig and ter Stegen is still open. Klopp names his first squad on 17 September. His first game as a national team coach comes a week later, 24 September in Amsterdam — Netherlands vs Germany in the Nations League, and Xavi Hernández's own debut as a national coach on the opposite bench.
