THE LOWDOWN — THE FULL HISTORY

BROTHERS AT THIS WORLD CUP

Iñaki and Nico Williams, raised in Bilbao by Ghanaian parents and club teammates, split in 2026: Iñaki for Ghana, Nico for Spain. The Doué brothers split between France and Côte d'Ivoire, the Souttars between Australia and Scotland, and half-brothers Brobbey and Luckassen between the Netherlands and Ghana.

NEW FLAGS

Luca Zidane plays for Algeria, the country of his grandfather. Anthony Elanga plays for Sweden; his father Joseph played for Cameroon at the 1998 World Cup.

DEBTS PAID

George Weah never reached a World Cup with Liberia; his son Timothy scored for the USA at the 2022 tournament. Lilian Thuram scored his only two France goals in one night, the 1998 semi-final; his sons Marcus and Khéphren now wear the same blue. Alf-Inge Håland's son Erling led Norway to their first World Cup since 1998.

WHERE IT STARTED

In 2010 the Boateng brothers became the first siblings to face each other at a World Cup, Germany against Ghana. At Euro 2016 the Xhaka brothers did the same, Switzerland against Albania.
